On: Big Breaks & No Fear

"What Happened, Miss Simone?" (2015, Liz Garbus)
Nobody’s going to do your life for you. You have to do it yourself, whether you’re rich or poor, out of money or raking it in, the beneficiary of ridiculous fortune or terrible injustice. And you have to do it no matter what is true. No matter what is hard. No matter what unjust, sad, sucky things befall you. Self-pity is a dead-end road. You make the choice to drive down it. It’s up to you to decide to stay parked there or to turn around and drive out. Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar

The legend that has become catching a 'big break' has always mystified me.

That pure luck and chance could potentially lead one to a Mount Olympian level of success, wealth, access and potential happiness has seemed so extravagantly out of reach and limited to only a select few privileged enough to cross paths with some divine plan.

But, such is how legends are borne, by placing ideas upon pedestals and creating an untouchable mythology which propagates that only those deemed Chosen are worthy. And so many have lived under the protective net of what they believe to be safe, what they are comfortable with, all while hoping and wishing for the day they too are gifted with their very own big break.

Unfortunately, that would appear to only be the case for a meager percentage of the population - at least, it would appear that way to me.

I should know, I've been praying for my 'big break' since I was 12.

The great Nina Simone once said, a life with no fear, is a free life, and such is the mantra I am attempting to apply to my life. It is such a mentality that has most assuredly pushed me into applying for jobs that I am wholly under qualified for (at least on paper), making friendships with people outside of my comfort zone (not uh..TOO far out), partaking in adventures my younger self would never have deigned to try and even putting myself out there as a writer.

For it is not the big break that finds you, it is you - the individual - who hunts for the big break.

You do so in living without fear, and by fear I mean mentally blocking oneself off to trying new things, not the very real emotional response to certain triggers...or am I contradicting myself? Either way, in summation, fear at this point in time is not an option. It is time for us to forge our own paths and grab destiny by the reigns.

If I could do it, so can you.

With Love,

Simone
